Michelle Gazely is a Canadian artist based in northern British Columbia. Born in Vancouver, her formative years were spent in Langley, where she was inspired by Mr. Dressup's drawing demonstrations and the doodles her Mom created as she spoke on the phone.
She received a Fine Arts Diploma from Kwantlen Polytechnic University and a Graphic Design & Illustration Diploma from Capilano University. After graduation, she spent fifteen years working as a graphic designer and four years working as a commercial photographer. In 2014, she moved with her family to a little log cabin on acreage in northern BC. Inspired by this new landscape of bright aspen forests and snowy winters, she picked up her paint brushes and began to paint. She found her way back to her childhood dream of becoming a fine artist. "I love to paint with harmonized colour palettes, bold brush strokes, intuitive pencil squiggles and marks. I am an oil painter but I spent a year playing with acrylic paints. I discovered the beauty of collaging, stencilling, layering and wiping away. Incorporating these techniques into my oil painting practice gives the viewer little visual surprises. Playing with my paints fills a curiosity
in me like nothing else does." |
